Climate and hydrographic variability in the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool during the last millennium

چکیده
[1] Planktonic foraminiferal Mg/Ca and dO derived sea surface temperature and salinity records from the Makassar Strait, Indonesia, show a long-term cooling and freshening trend, as well as considerable centennial-scale variability during the last millennium. The warmest temperatures and highest salinities occurred during the Medieval Warm Period (MWP), while the coolest temperatures and lowest salinities occurred during the Little Ice Age (LIA). These changes in the western Pacific, along with observations from other high resolution records indicate a regionally coherent southern displacement of the Inter-tropical Convergence Zone during the LIA, with more arid conditions in the northern tropics and wetter conditions in the southern tropics. Because of the huge warm water pool that straddles across the tropical western Pacific and eastern Indian Oceans, the climate variations in these two oceans are closely related and need to be studied as a whole. Observations reveal a striking out-of-phase relationship between the zonal sea surface height (SSH) gradients in these two oceans and, to a lesser extent, between the corresponding sea ...
متن کاملPost-glacial evolution of the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool and El Niño-Southern oscillation
Recent research has revealed new insights into the temperature, size, and variability of the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool (IPWP) and the nature of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Sea surface temperature (SST) reconstructions from foraminiferal Mg/Ca, alkenone, and revised coral Sr/Ca palaeothermometry agree that SSTs in the IPWP during the LGM were B3 C c...
متن کاملThe Role of the Indonesian Throughflow in the Indo–Pacific Climate Variability in the GFDL Coupled Climate Model
The impacts of the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) on the tropical Indo–Pacific climate, particularly on the character of interannual variability, are explored using a coupled general circulation model (CGCM). A pair of CGCM experiments—a control experiment with an open ITF and a perturbation experiment in which the ITF is artificially closed—is integrated for 200 model years, with the 1990 values...
متن کاملCoordinated hydrological regimes in the Indo‐Pacific region during the past two millennia
[1] Instrumental data suggest that major shifts in tropical Pacific atmospheric dynamics and hydrology have occurred within the past century, potentially in response to anthropogenic warming. To better understand these trends, we use the hydrogen isotopic ratios of terrestrial higher plant leaf waxes (dDwax) in marine sediments from southwest Sulawesi, Indonesia, to compile a detailed reconstru...
متن کاملIndian Ocean Variability in the GFDL Coupled Climate Model
The interannual variability of the Indian Ocean, with particular focus on the Indian Ocean dipole/zonal mode (IODZM), is investigated in a 250-yr simulation of the GFDL coupled global general circulation model (CGCM). The CGCM successfully reproduces many fundamental characteristics of the climate system of the Indian Ocean. The character of the IODZM is explored, as are relationships between p...
